The outpatient clinic for family medicine in the village of Horenka in Kyiv region was modernized. From now on, the building is energy efficient and will partially operate using "green" energy sources.

At the beginning of a full-scale armed invasion of russia against Ukraine, as a result of shelling, the building of a medical facility was damaged, and the heating system failed. In order to increase the energy independence of the institution, a solar power plant was installed during the modernization and the heating system was updated using a ground-to-water heat pump. This will increase the energy efficiency of the outpatient clinic, reduce the negative impact on the environment, reduce heating costs by at least 80 %, and also provide the outpatient clinic with the opportunity to have an autonomous power supply source that will cover up to 60% of its needs.

“The restoration of healthcare facilities is our priority. During the 11 months of the full-scale war in Ukraine, 1,044 medical facilities were damaged and another 173 were destroyed to the ground. During the reconstruction and modernization of healthcare facilities, basic requirements for energy efficiency, accessibility and infection control requirements are taken into account. Such requirements have already been adopted as part of the new version of the state building codes “Healthcare Institutions”, — says Deputy Minister of Health, Chief State Sanitary doctor Ihor Kuzin. “I am pleased to see that the outpatient clinic restoration project meets these requirements and brings Ukraine closer to the European principles of zero emissions, energy security and energy independence.”

This is the first medical facility where such an energy-efficient system was installed. The project was initiated by the international organization Greenpeace and implemented in cooperation with the Ukrainian public organizations “Ecodiia”, “Ecoclub” and the Charity Foundation “Victory of Ukraine”.

The use of renewable energy sources will help the outpatient clinic to have light and heat even in the current conditions of unstable power supply. Due to savings in energy resources and electricity generation, the cost of reconstructing the heating system and installing solar panels should be recouped in 6-7 years.
